Main Article

I have written a long-form article answering many questions readers had on Peel and Stick roofing and the many benefits of using it. I would encourage all who have not read it as yet to head on over and give it a read. It will take about five minutes of your time.

A step by step guide on how to install peel and stick roofing.

This roofing material is relatively easy to install. Installing it in an afternoon is possible should you have someone to assist you in applying it. Since this roofing material does not require any specialized tools to install, it is very user-friendly.

However, I would recommend that if you are planning on installing this roofing material yourself to first speak to a roofing professional and get a few quotes on the job at hand. You never know it might be in your price range, after all.

PRO TIP:Speaking to roofing experts also helps with some tips and tricks that may assist you should you be doing the work yourself.

Step 1: Cleaning roofing surface.

First, you will want to ensure that your roofing surface is spotless before applying the roofing material. Cleaning will help the material adhere to the roof decking properly, avoiding the risk of bubbling and peeling after installation.

Sweep the entire surface and ensure you remove all debris. Missing any of the larger debris will compromise the material, and it may not adhere to the surface correctly.

If there is tougher grime on the surface, get a degreaser or a strong detergent to remove all the dirt that is present. I would also recommend that you use a damp towel to wipe down the surface to ensure you remove all the dust.

PRO TIP:If any nails are sticking out of the roof decking, hammer these flat into the surface, they should sit flush with the board

Step 2: Align material on the roof.

Start to unroll the peel and stick and align it with the lowest edge and side edge of your roof. Begin removing the paper under the material exposing the sticky side, and press the material down onto the roof decking. Ensure that you keep a straight edge as you apply it to the roof decking.

Step 3: Remove the release paper and apply the material.

Start to slowly remove the release paper from the back of the roofing material and continually apply pressure and smooth it all down. Once you have gotten to the end of the decking, cut the material to size with a knife ensuring it reaches the very edge of the roof.

Step 4: Rolling the material.

Take a hand roller and firmly roll it over the newly applied material to ensure that you have perfect contact with the roof decking.

Step 5: Next layer and repeat.

Each consecutive piece you apply to your roof decking should be applied at least 3 inches over the last for a watertight seal.

Take the next roll and begin applying it like the last with a 3-inch overlap and repeat until you have covered the entire roof deck.

As you can see, applying this roofing material is very simple to do. It can be done in an afternoon, depending on the size and especially if you can get a few of your friends to assist you.

However, if not done correctly, you can run into some serious problems down the line. It is for this reason I recommend contacting a roofing professional that has experience with the product to do the work for you. If the material is applied too loosely, you risk leaking and water damage to your roofing members.

Peel and stick roofing has a life span of about 15 to 20 years if installed correctly and maintained.
